Lots of people are becoming familiar with the Roland MC4 MicroComposer and its become quite a legendary box over the years. With well known works from composers such as Vince Clarke & Aphex Twin the musical applications of the MC4 cover a lot of ground. Over the years I've been playing around with different ways of working with this box since I got my first one in 1997, and I started integrating it with my algorithmic / generative composition processes.
The simplest way to get algorithmic data into the MC4 that I have used is driving it directly using my other CA sequencers MANIAC or Ulamizer-II using step record mode and manually punching in "measure ends" to get bunches of generative sequences recorded. One method that works well but is somewhat tedious (although good for mental focus) has been to generate text files with a series of number values using custom programs made in Mathematica. I first tried this laborious method in 2006 using Cellular Automata, around the time I finished my PhD. I did a brief page on it here and this post is a little more elaboration on that webpage.
The method I used to generate the data values was adapted from an Australasian Computer Music Conference paper I presented in 2005 :

The process is relatively simple and some example outputs are given in the tables below. Each table contains an associated tab delimited text file containing CA evolutions that have been scaled MOD 126 to the full Control Voltage (CV) range (0 to 125) of the MC4. Each row is an 8 step set of CV sequence values. The rows were converted from CA evolutions from all possible seeds for an 8 cell system size running for 8 generations. A graphic overview is provided in the left column (time runs left to right).
The first two tables are elementary CA rules 15 and 18, the other two rules are 5 neighbour rules 6ce750a4 and ed34a597. In the final table rule ed34a597 has been used to generate 64 sets of 16 step CV loops using a system size of 32 cells. I have zipped together a selection of elementary rules -> here which contains rules {15, 18, 22, 30, 45, 54, 60, 62, 73, 85, 90, 105, 110, 126, 129, 150, 170, 210, 240, 225} with a gif and tab delimited text file for each rule.
A similar process can be used for step/gate times and MPX pulses, by changing the scaling of the CA output to match those ranges or assigning CA cells to MPX pulse outputs. This method can of course be scaled to any range within the full range of MC4 values with a little code tweaking e.g. rescaling note values to 0 to 24 for a bassline pattern or for velocity values to make quieter notes etc.
Once all this data is entered it is now possible to be saved for reloading at a later date. This can be done using the MC4's MTR-100 digital data cassette unit or via the tape dump output. A different method I devised was published in Sound on Sound magazine, see this post: saving MC4 data to a computer via the tape port. You can also use the data dump as a soundfile to play around with as well!
